My latest documentary reel for 2014.
In June, 2014 I was fortunate to get the opportunity to shoot for National Geographic. We worked for 5 days in Oregon and our objective was to follow the Spotted Owl. One of the best experiences I've ever had filming birds in the wild.
Recently shot a short video installation for Lululemon. "The Art of Stealing" is a collaboration between Lululemon LAB X and the Response Dance Group. Film directed by Jenn Strom.
One of my latest short films has premiered (and will be re-played regularly) as a part of Knowledge Network's original series TAKE ME HOME. The series follows celebrities, artists, musicians, and athletes, touching on what home means to them in British Columbia. For my film I followed professional bike rider Travis Collier, and created a piece that connected his riding grounds to a place that feels very much like home to him.
Official Skull Skates commercial is done. I had a blast shooting something skateboard related and thanks to all involved who helped me on it.
Online magazine Northern Embassy interviewed me regarding a three part series of shorts that I made showcasing professional bmx rider Travis Collier.
Below is the most recent of the three videos which were shot over the past 3 years.
I directed and shot this short portrait of Brad Prevedoros early summer 2013. The film tells the story of a guitar musician who has made genuine choices around
his work and his craft…choices that have contributed to both a
self-sustaining career and a man of great integrity. Special thanks to the rest of the crew - Linda McKinlay, George Faulkner, and Mark Lazeski.
This piece touches on the bird species known as Starlings. We follow biologist Tony Williams in his quest to study, uncover, and dispel some of the myths about this misunderstood avian. I shot and edited this solo over the course of 2011/2012. Music and sound design by Mark Lazeski.
I've recently been nominated for a LEO AWARD for BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY. The film I'm nominated for is a documentary produced by the National Film Board called UNINTERRUPTED. It was directed by award winning filmmaker Nettie Wild and it's story focuses around the Adams River Salmon Run. I'll be walking the red carpet on June 7th, 2013 at the 'Celebration Awards Ceremony'. Fingers crossed.
Shooting interviews is one of the biggest parts of my job as a documentary/commercial filmmaker. It's a fine line between shooting a good looking interview and a great one, and in this piece I was fortunate enought to experiment with a few tracking moves during some of the talking heads in order to up the production value further.
My film Fallen Gardens will make it's broadcast debut on the Knowledge Network over the coming months. It's always very exciting to get my work broadcast on television and I'm thrilled to be able to collaborate with such an awesome group of people over at Knowledge. Five other short films of mine will also be playing periodically on the network throughout the broadcast day. Check the trailer below...
A cold Spring day was had by all while I shot this skimboard commercial for the local brand 'Skull Skates'. Tim Ladner is a trooper.
I recently shot and edited this video for the Wilderness Committee as
part of a series showcasing endangered species in BC. This video touches
on local legend Dick Cannings and his life in the Okanagan as a birder.
I shot and edited this piece for the Wilderness Committee, and it recently took home the Canadian Wildlife Federation 50th Annniversary Video contest award. This piece touches on the Oregon Spotted Frog and it's ongoing battle to stay alive in an ever growing urban world.
Currently contributing an array of HD visuals for Knowledge Network’s television broadcast. Shots range from abstract closeups to glossy nature images and/or everyday city life. You’ll see these short clips pop up throughout Knowledge Networks daily broadcast.
The Nature Trust of BC has secured over 61,000 hectares (150,000 acres) of critical habitat for wildlife, plants and fish in British Columbia. I recently shot this traditional-style short video, and it was used to promote and raise money so that the Nature Trust could officially purchase this Okanagan property. Special thanks to George Faulkner for his assistance in the field, editorial work, and original music track.
Spent a week DOP’ing for award winning documentary film director Nettie Wild. The focus was on the legendary salmon run that occurs annually in Adams River and we managed to come away with some incredible images. Working with Nettie was a truly awesome experience in that she allowed us to really break away from traditional ‘literal’ styles of wildlife shooting. We strove for a visual aesthetic that felt experimental, but at the same time told a story in every image. Special thanks to Steve Breckon (our camera assist) for his talent and wisdom on location.
The short was released theatrically at the 2012 Vancouver International Film Festival, and later projected for multiscreen viewing outside of the Van City Theater
Completed my film Fallen Gardens and it is now online. The film recently won a Critics Choice Award at the BCSPCA Wild Arc Film Festival in Victoria, as well as made it’s US debute at the Santa Cruz Film Festival and Arkansas Film Festival. This piece follows three neighbors and their devotion to garden culture. The film focuses on co-existance between society and nature; the love/hate relationship between humans and deer.
This black and white mood piece touches on professional bmx’er Travis Collier, and his influences growing up as a flatland bike rider. This is the last installment of a three part series with Travis, and all three videos reflect his different experiences within the confines of flatland bmx. Root has recently been accepted into the Kalamazoo Film Festival which takes place April 26th/2012.
I shot and directed a short entitled ‘NIGHT RIDE” (Music by Christopher Bissonnette). The video was shown at the NEW YORK BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL as well as the SPOKED FESTIVAL in Vancouver. Its most recent showing was at the MONTREAL BICYCLE FILM FEST, as one of the series of shorts opening for Spike Jonze’s last film entitled ‘THE BIRTH OF BIG AIR’.
